The Initiative
Incorporated as the SKUAST Kashmir RBIC Foundation (a Section 8 Company), RBIC operates as an autonomous entity anchored within SKUAST-K. We identify, nurture, and commercialize disruptive agri-technologies and rural innovations in the region.
What is an RBIC?
RBIC (Rural Business Incubation Centre) is a flagship initiative funded and supported by NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development). While NABARD acts as India’s apex development bank for the rural economy, RBICs are early-stage innovation hubs established to transform grassroots ideas into scalable, market-ready rural enterprises. An RBIC is a specialised startup incubator set up jointly by NABARD and leading academic or agricultural institutions.
The Core Mission
To transition rural youth from “job seekers into job creators”, with a strong focus on value addition, employment generation, and socio-economic growth in rural landscapes.
Sector Focus
Agriculture, allied sectors (livestock, fisheries, dairy), food processing, rural fintech, water conservation, climate resilience, and rural off-farm activities.
Key Offerings to Startups
End-to-End Incubation
Structured assistance from 2–3 months of pre-incubation (ideation) to 6–12 months of core business incubation.
Lab-to-Farm Infrastructure
Access to advanced university laboratories, research facilities, and experimental testing farms.
Financial Linkages
Access to seed funding, commercial markets, and specialised NABARD grants.
Notable Active RBICs in India
SDAU RBIC
Established in 2021 at Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, the first dedicated rural incubator in the western region.
SKUAST-K RBIC
Operating at the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology to boost agri-business across J&K and Ladakh.
XLRI RBIC
Formally inaugurated by NABARD Chairman Shri Shaji K.V. to combine XLRI’s management rigour with rural ingenuity.
